Meg Ryan has posted a tribute to the deceased director Rob Reiner, under whose direction she worked in the beloved rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
Reiner was located lifeless with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Los Angeles over the weekend.
“Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and made a court appearance today. He’s being detained without the option of bail. It’s been reported that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father deceased.
“It is my belief that from this horror, positive change and understanding can emerge,” Ryan went on to write. “While uncertain, I suspect they'd wish for a hopeful, compassionate outcome that fosters mutual understanding and peace.”
Reiner’s other children Jake and Romy shared a statement today. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they said. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They were more than parents; they were our closest confidants.”
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, similarly honored Reiner via comments shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” the statement said. “He adored his actors. He elevated his writers. Freedom was his key offering. He listened to ideas and included you in the creative journey. Everyone felt like part of a crew. His direction was a gift, but his legacy is broader.”
When Harry Met Sally was a box office and critical triumph in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and securing Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner whilst filming When Harry Met Sally. The pair were brought together by Barry Sonnenfeld, a fellow filmmaker and pal.
Reiner’s extensive filmography comprised classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were husband and wife for over three decades.
