The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off after a rollercoaster final round of competition.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win over the same opponent.
The champion started the final round with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.
This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
