Currently exist "no plans" for US President President Trump to meet Russian President Putin "in the near term", a White House official has declared.
This past week the US president said he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the Ukraine conflict.
A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration said the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a meeting was not "required".
The administration withheld additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.
Trump had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Certain accounts indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources indicating the president had pushed him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.
However, on Monday the American president embraced a truce plan endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the conflict on the existing battle lines.
"Leave it as is where it stands," he said.
Moscow has consistently objected against pausing the present battle positions.
The Russian government was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov stated on this week, implying that freezing the front line would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.
The "fundamental issues" of the war required resolution, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of comprehensive conditions that include the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a non-starter for Kyiv and its EU supporters.
Zelensky stated conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.
He also said the sole subject that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine.
The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently came ahead of rumors that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.
The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had turned out to be a "significant input" in negotiations", he added.
