Entire Career of Income Not Enough for UK Labor Force to Enter Richest 10%, Study Reveals

Based on recent research, the median earner in the UK would have to work over five decades of salary to achieve the financial standing of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.

Growing Economic Disparity Across Decades

The study analyzed wealth distribution statistics covering the 2020-22 timeframe and discovered that in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have required nearly four decades of typical employment income to join the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

A research lead part of the report commented: "Financial divides in Britain are currently so significant that a average worker accumulating their complete salary throughout their career would remain unable to attain the highest level of the wealth ladder."

Quantifying the Economic Gap

The research discovered that the disparity between the net worth of the median citizen and someone in the richest segment was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had increased to £1.3m in inflation-adjusted terms by recent times.

The analyst continued: "These gaps are especially alarming as financial progression in Britain is limited – those who commence life wealthy tend to stay wealthy, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Although the wealth gap widening in absolute terms, the share of total wealth in the UK owned by the wealthiest families – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," per the analysis.

Throughout these years, overall assets in the UK rose substantially from three times the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.

Drivers of Financial Divide

Referred to as "automatic" appreciation, via growing real estate costs and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the main drivers of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, as stated in the report.

These gains tended to accrue to elderly homeowners, the research shows – exacerbating the intergenerational wealth divide.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The typical financial disparity between people in their early 30s and those in their early 60s more than doubled in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in pre-financial crisis, to £310k.

Area-Based Differences

Additionally, there were stark area-based disparities, with the average level of net worth in 2020-22 amounting to £290k in the SE of England, where housing costs have tended to rise rapidly, compared with 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

Pandemic Period Effects

Amid the health crisis, when countless laborers were supported by the public-funded employment protection, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the data shows numerous families were able to save, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes fared much better, however. "The median home in the bottom income bracket saw their liquid savings increase by just £80 throughout the health crisis (across the pandemic timeframe), broadly the same as the pre-crisis period. In contrast, the average household in the top income bracket saw their available funds rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
