Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.
Summers remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have served, excited about the prospects of the organization, and look forward observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
The recently released emails demonstrated that the official communicated with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the AI firm stated it accepted Summers' determination to resign.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the Board," OpenAI commented.
This development arrives after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to release its files on Epstein.
The bill will afterward move to the office of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has indicated he expects to sign the bill, after reversing his view on the issue following pushback from his base.
A group of Epstein-related correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned numerous well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.
The communications revealed that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to introduce Summers to prominent international personalities.
After the messages were shared with the general audience, the former official said he took "complete accountability for my poor judgment to continue interacting with the financier".
He added that he desired "to restore trust and repair connections with the people closest to me".
The economist served in high-level positions under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He led the university from five years and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his departure from public duties previously on this week, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Following his declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in DC where Summers was a prominent member, announced that the economist was ceased to be affiliated with the group.
Summers became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which creates the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive Sam Altman.
