Gas Detonation Costs 3 Police Officers While Executing Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy

A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen others were hurt in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion occurred as police and firefighters entered the residence close to the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the location and another man who escaped after the explosion was found not long after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene revealed the property left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the property was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents set off the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander informed news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion included 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The official believed the explosion had occurred on a story above the access point and told journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants told Italian media, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
