Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Investment Giant.

An iconic tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.

Details of the Sale

The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard regulatory approvals.

The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

The Island's Size and Amenities

Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, including a substantial array of facilities:

• Five hotels
• More than 20 restaurants and bars
• Twenty shops and retail spaces
• An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
• A marina and a functioning airport

The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.

Historical Context at Ownership

The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.

Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.

The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background

The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
