Audiences are thrilled for the Stephen King adaptation Welcome to Derry, which is garnering praise and weaving in elements from other Stephen King works. Following the premiere, HBO has revealed that the second installment will arrive early, timed perfectly for Halloween.
Kicking off on the last day of October at 3 a.m. EST, episode two of It: Welcome to Derry will launch on the streaming service, prior to its linear broadcast. Subsequent episodes of the series run will premiere on Sunday nights on HBO and HBO Max, culminating in the season finale on the 14th of December.
Taking place within the Derry mythology, It: Welcome to Derry borrows elements from King’s iconic novel while expanding on the setting established by director Andy Muschietti in the recent movie adaptations. It Chapter One highlighted adolescents battling unimaginable horrors, making it appropriate that the prequel continues that tradition. However, the first installment of the HBO series proves it aimed to increase the tension, offering heightened horror than Muschietti’s films and creating a harsh vibe for the upcoming episodes.
Set in 1962, this show presents a new generation of parents and youngsters residing in a seemingly idyllic town masking a dark secret. This place operates on a brutal, periodic loop—characterized by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a evil entity resurfaces each 27-year cycle. Although Welcome to Derry might sound like it strays too near to the cinematic adaptations initially, what differentiates the streaming show is its dual perspective—unfolding through the eyes of both children and adults at the same time. The kids are highly exposed to the entity's fear, but the adults also face confronting their personal demons born from local discrimination and lurking supernatural forces.
It: Welcome to Derry debuts on October 31 at 3 a.m. EST.
