McLaren Points Finger at Opposing Racers for Piastri-Norris Collision

Tire detaches from racing car after contact between Norris and Piastri

One tire detaches from the car of Lando Norris after he made contact with fellow driver Piastri at the opening of the US GP short race.

McLaren Formula 1 executives Zak Brown and Andrea Stella attributed rival drivers for the crash between Oscar Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

Piastri, ahead of his teammate in the championship by twenty-two points, bounced into his fellow McLaren driver after colliding with the Hulkenberg.

The collision eliminated both McLaren drivers out of the race, along with the Alonso, who was on the inner side of Hulkenberg.

McLaren Leaders Express Disappointment Over Incident

Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, told Sky Sports that some of the driving at the start was "inexperienced", stating: "Clearly Hulkenberg hit Piastri and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 boss Andrea Stella stated: "The reaction is that we are disappointed that we were denied the chance to compete."

"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience fail to act with appropriate caution. Enter the first corner, make sure you don't damage competitors and continue."

The team suggested that Stella was pointing to both Hulkenberg and Alonso.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

However, 1996 world champion Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he believed the Australian had not shown enough understanding of the risks of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.

Piastri had a better start than the Briton and initially challenged on the outer side on the ascending approach to the turn.

But he then cut back in an effort to get a run on Norris on the exit, only to collide with Hulkenberg.

Driver Reactions After the Incident

Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what happened, I tried to cut back on Lando and we were both very far from the apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Lando. Unfortunate."

Norris commented: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Behind us things happened and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I don't know. I need to look a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inner side, but some vehicles came very fast from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the center."

The Sauber driver, who had earned a season-best fourth, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from yesterday in the bin. Just messy."

"Oscar turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and exit of the first corner but I cannot vanish."

"I had Fernando attack on the inside and I couldn't see him any more. I wanted to leave space for him and then Oscar turned in and the contact was inevitable."

Aftermath and McLaren's Reaction

The team will review the incident with their racers but only after the race weekend. Both cars needed significant repairs before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.

Stella said: "Overall displeased but we take it on the chin, we are now concentrating on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the weekend from there."

"Our team holds a strong position from our performance point of view so I hope we have the opportunity to compete, race normally and capitalise on our performance."

"Championship points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just prudence. A bit more care would be beneficial for everyone."

Standings Impact

The race was taken by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now 55 points behind Piastri and thirty-three behind of the Briton.

Stella said: "The implication is what the maths says - we missed out on eight championship points with both racers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two strong drivers. We anticipate just some standard competition."

The Red Bull driver said he was taking the title race one event at a time.
