Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police released video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
