The daughter of former South African Leader Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror charges at the start of her trial in the harbor city of Durban city.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being prosecuted over comments she posted on digital networks four years ago during deadly unrest in South Africa that came after the arrest of her father.

A week of chaos in several parts of the country in July 2021, including looting and arson, resulted in at least 300 killed and caused damage worth an projected $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).

The defendant has been accused of encouraging this turmoil and faces accusations of incitement to commit terrorism and public violence.

Background of the Case

The protests were centered in the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the former president's detention for ignoring a legal directive to testify at an investigation into accusations of corruption while he was serving as president.

The defendant has always denied the charges against her, with her legal representative earlier describing the government's legal argument as insufficient.

She has also repeatedly claimed the accusations against her were an attempt to resolve political grievances with her dad after he founded his own political party and ran against the ruling party.

Backing and Case Arguments

This was reinforced by the foundation, which claimed the case was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "political and family-related harassment" against the former president and his family.

A small number of supporters from her party, her party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other party leaders were present at the hearings inside.

The defendant's representatives has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and does not have concrete proof for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Trial

  • Social media comments from the past form the foundation of the government's case
  • Fatal demonstrations in July 2021 resulted in significant fatalities and financial damage
  • The accused is charged with multiple charges of encouragement to public disorder
  • Judicial trials are anticipated to proceed for multiple days

The legal proceedings continues as both sides present their evidence before the judicial authority in what is anticipated to be a carefully observed court case with major policy ramifications for South Africa.
