The chief executive of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached pizza saturation while broadening the franchise into fried chicken has been ousted after conflicts with its governing body.
The former CEO is leaving after only 24 months in the top role, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the company's chief operating officer, Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a permanent CEO.
Rennie, who was with the company for more than two decades, had aimed to shift Britain's largest pizza food delivery firm towards chicken offerings, commenting in a recent interview there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted chicken was the fastest-growing protein in the international market.
It is understood that there was tension between Rennie and the governance team over his approach and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was stepping down “as a joint decision”.
In September, Domino's launched its poultry product line – which Rennie described as a “significant new phase” for the company – and is trialling it in select stores in the north-west of England and Northern Ireland.
While the company is still intending to launch it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as scheduled, it views fried chicken as an addition to its main pizza offerings.
Ian Bull, the Domino's chairman, commented: “The board believes that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and profitability in the main pizza segment. We are focused on selecting the suitable leader to lead the disciplined execution of that development approach.”
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said sales fell by one and a half percent in the third quarter. In August, it warned that the quick-service industry had “intensified” as it attributed reduced spending in the run-up to the budget and rising wage costs for below-target performance and a 15 percent decline in interim earnings.
Competitors are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut disclosed the closing of multiple locations a recently, after the business behind its British operations fell into administration.
Responding to consumer trends towards better nutrition, the company has rolled out light items, such as its thin-crust line of pizzas below 400 calories as well as meat-free and gluten-free pizzas. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 kcals. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a small has 909 calories.
The interim chief has been with the company since 2021, and had a background at the gaming group William Hill. It is believed that she does not want to take on the top job long-term.
Frampton stated: “We have a number of active development and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on carrying out at speed.”
She added these included further work on the company's procurement system and product development, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also in need of a long-term CFO until the spring, when Andy Andrea comes aboard from the Irish cider and beer maker C&C Group. In the meantime, Snow is interim finance chief.
