The direst potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by scientists, ranging from a blistering 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in ocean levels. An alternative projection envisions a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and energy needs.

Plausible Extremes, Not Forecasts

These consequences, some of which are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are viewed as unlikely but plausible. The researchers said that these models plugged a hole in risk assessment that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.

"The climate extremes we have mapped are not forecasts, but they are plausible," stated the professor who directed the research. "The UK has been planning without the frameworks to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now provided planners what they need to get ready for environmental results they wish to avoid, but must not overlook."

A Range of Extreme Weather Possibilities

A further series of dire projections sets out the projected severity of severe conditions between now and the year 2100. These show that temperatures could skyrocket in certain periods by up to 6C above average, while rainfall could be 300% of standard measurements.

The probability of the worst-case outcomes happening could not be calculated due to unknown factors about what steps will be implemented to tackle global heating and how the planet's climate will react. This research was likened to defence planning or scenario planning for financial systems.

Key Possibility Elements

  • Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if international cooperation collapses or if powerful amplifying effects such as the Amazon basin becoming a net carbon source unleash its enormous store of carbon. This would lead to extreme and prolonged heatwaves and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
  • AMOC Shutdown: A critical sea current, the AMOC, is losing strength and losing stability due to ocean warming. A collapse commencing by 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Agriculture would face immense difficulties and water resources would be completely altered," explained the lead researcher.
  • Rapid Sea Level Rise: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if polar ice in Greenland and Antarctica collapse rapidly, inundating coastal cities and towns. Unlike the other scenarios, this threat is already recognized by infrastructure experts.
  • Clean Air Warming: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is drastically reduced. This paradoxical outcome occurs because aerosol particles from industrial activity scatter sunlight from warming the ground.

Planning for the Unthinkable

These dire projections could be used to inform the construction of long-term infrastructure, for example expanded cities, power generation facilities and water management networks. Understanding these future hazards could also speed the transition to slash carbon pollution.

The research formulated the worst-case scenarios using a mix of real-world events, computer simulations and climate physics. These outcomes exclude potential global problems including the global food shortages and resource wars.

This work was initiated as part of a national climate resilience programme. Previous assessments have warned that not enough attention was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

Official experts has stated that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and examine the risks for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been criticised as being "insufficient" by certain experts.

An official statement said: "Climate change is at the center of our national priorities, both adapting for the future and transitioning to a renewable energy leader. It is essential that the UK is resilient for the effects."
