Remains of Triathlete Seemingly Taken by Predator Located on Pacific Beach

Emergency personnel in California have found the deceased of a experienced swimmer on a shoreline to the northwest of Santa Cruz. This find comes nearly seven days after she went missing amid growing belief that she was killed by a shark.

The deceased of the swimmer were located on Saturday, as announced by her family members. The triathlete, 55 years old, was a member of a group of more than a twelve swimmers who entered the water from a popular swimming spot near Monterey on 21 December, but she did not come back to dry land. A passerby informed first responders that they spotted a shark with what seemed to be a swimmer in its grip emerge from the waves.

The tragic event and accounts of the predator drew considerable concern and led to extensive efforts from local agencies to search for Fox. The following day, Fox’s husband and other friends from her aquatic group held a solemn procession along the Lovers Point coastline. A family patriarch described his daughter as an empathetic and kind individual who was passionate about swimming and had participated in several triathlons, including the famous challenging event.

Officials previously initiated a major search and rescue operation involving several Coast Guard teams along with units from area first responder agencies. The search agency called off its mission for Fox after a extended operation that searched approximately a vast area of ocean.

Fire department personnel stated on that Saturday that they had located a body on a beach near Davenport. The Santa Cruz county sheriff’s office issued a statement the same day, citing an ongoing investigation into the incident.

“Earlier today, at approximately 2:00 pm, a deceased individual was found in the water south of Davenport Beach. Because of the nearby location to the earlier shark attack victim in that region, our agency is coordinating with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the Pacific Grove Police Department regarding the recovery,” the release said.

A close acquaintance, Sara Rubin, wrote about Fox as a friend and passionate athlete who found tranquility in the Pacific Ocean. In her words that Fox and a friend began a routine of weekly ocean swims at Lovers Point two decades ago. Rubin added that Erica didn't require a book to tell her what she felt intuitively: that ocean swimming was a therapy for body and mind, an journey as much as a meditation.

Rubin said that her friend had forged a deeply intimate relationship with the Pacific Ocean by swimming in it—consistently, on choppy days and gloriously calm days, accumulating what could only be guessed as an immense distance.

Rubin also remarked that the athlete “was aware of the dangers” of entering the water with a presence of large sharks, and would have objected to framing this as an attack. Instead people to view it as an incident—an animal’s behavior is exactly that.

Even though many species of sharks live off the coast of California, fatal encounters are exceptionally infrequent. In the history leading up to this tragedy, there have been only sixteen shark-related fatalities in California in the past three-quarters of a century.
