Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's response pointed to the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.

The Cause of the Recent Exchange

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' remarkable comeback win over the Giants. The coach remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson joined the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious split between the player and his coach.
