Has Sony achieved another hit? Coming after the success of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed over $600 million worldwide, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the $100M milestone internationally, hitting a global total of $108M during its debut. This feature beat out the thriller Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second weekend in cinemas, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring actor Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Directed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It earned over $18 million domestically after a robust $5.2 million Saturday earnings and $4.5M Sunday. Globally, the produced by MAPPA feature earned nearly $15 million across 46 international territories, resulting in a global sum of over $60 million through Sony distribution ($43.1M overseas, $18.2 million domestic). Sony has yet to announce its final earnings figure.
Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment had earlier commented, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34M in the North America in 2022 and debuted with a comparable eighteen million dollars in the U.S.. The new film's debut weekend matches that benchmark, while its $108M worldwide total currently tracks slightly below Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s over $166 million overall box office. Although it’s unlikely Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will match the earnings seen by smash success Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a huge win for Sony.
The studio and its partner the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to propel their leadership at the anime box office. The movie's marketing campaign kicked off at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, exclusive activations, and Pochita-themed pictures, and later included a significant involvement at the New York Comic Con including behind-the-scenes footage, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for general audiences and influencers alike after the last day of the convention.
2025 is a significant period for anime, and for the company, which has an additional anime film debuting in the coming months in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
