For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories built from the memories of Vecna. Their quest for a way out in episode 6 forces them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.
Editor's Note: This article reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.
Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points of the final season, the full story behind the encounter was first explored the theatrical production the prequel play.
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the mine shaft is that employee.
Based on what is understood of Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the box could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later as a different person. As a youth, he battles the whispers of a malevolent force, similar to how Will was influenced by the shadow monster in the past.
Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a showdown between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.
Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the endgame conflict to come.
