The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
