Arne Slot has stated that the team leadership agree with his assessment regarding the recent downturn and he will not abandon their offensive approach in search of a turnaround. The head coach acknowledged that six defeats in seven outings was below standard ahead of Aston Villa's visit.
The manager acknowledged the scrutiny was intense before his rotated squad suffered Carabao Cup elimination against Crystal Palace. However, he insisted that this urgency to stop the losing streak is not coming from the team's proprietors or executive leadership following a summer transfer outlay of nearly £450 million.
"They say similar things," remarked the Liverpool boss, whose side will meet Los Blancos in the continental tournament and visit Manchester City in the English top flight.
Slot believes his team "boast a remarkable roster if they are all fit and all ready for the fixture list". He noted that the transfer window acquisitions in talents including the attacking midfielder and the Swedish striker, who is likely to miss out again against Aston Villa through injury, had left the club "in a strong situation for the near future and the years to come".
When asked why his team were struggling to integrate, he answered: "That question isn't constructive. 'What's causing this?' I provide reasons and people say I'm offering alibis. I can list five or six reasons why we are not winning as much or suffering defeats as we do but, as I always emphasize, there are never enough excuses to have a performance streak as we had now."
Only Burnley (twenty-one) have allowed more significant openings from open play this season than the Merseysiders (19). The league leaders, Arsenal, have allowed just two. Yet Liverpool's coach rejects the team has been overly exposed and maintains there is no justification to sacrifice his attacking principles for a more pragmatic style after 10 games without a shutout.
"I don't see us conceding a lot of chances so I don't see a reason to change our playing style completely but we have to enhance in preventing goals," he stated.
"When facing United, how many chances did we concede? Against Eintracht Frankfurt when we were 3-1 up, we scarcely gave up a attempt on goal. In all the games we have competed in we haven't given up a lot of chances. Definitely not. We do give away a bit more than last season but that has to do with us being 1-0 down so you play more openly. But overall I don't think that our issue is that we allow too many opportunities. Our challenge is we are unable to finish the opportunities we generate."
