This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
