Donald Trump’s corporate entity increased its recruitment of overseas employees on short-term work permits this period, while his government was placing obstacles for other companies attempting to do the same, a report released recently claimed.
Based on data from the US Department of Labor, the business aimed to bring in at least 184 overseas employees in the coming year for temporary positions at the US president’s Florida property, two golf clubs and his Virginia winery.
The number of applications for temporary work visas for workers including waitstaff, office assistants, cleaning staff, culinary employees and agricultural laborers was the record filed by the company, and up from 121 in 2021, when Trump’s first term concluded.
It was also the fifth instance in 10 years that the former president had attempted to bring in more than 100 overseas workers for seasonal jobs at his Florida resort, according to labor statistics.
The revelation coincides with a tightening on immigration laws by his government that has included the introduction of a substantial charge on skilled worker visas; increased review of the activities of the millions of people who possess American work permits; and restrictive new rules for international scholars and reporters.
In total, the business sought to hire over 560 foreign laborers over the five years the former president has been in the presidency, from 2017 to 2021 and during the upcoming year.
Notably, the former president was criticized by certain in the GOP this period for remarks defending the need for foreign workers when a company was unable to find people with “specific talents” to fill particular roles.
“You can’t just say a nation is coming in, going to spend $10bn to build a plant, and going to recruit individuals off an jobless roster who have been unemployed in years, and they’re going to start making their missiles. It doesn’t work that well,” he stated to a interviewer after it was implied that overseas employees lower the pay of US workers.
The White House declined a request for comment, and the business did not immediately respond to an request for information.
