Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Star Sets Aside Egotism Outside.

One snub was enough. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to understand that winning the World Cup is probably going to require contributions by the talented midfielder, even if it is equally on the midfielder to adapt to the game plans and team pecking order essential with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's welcoming fold.

Tuchel desires Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is a matter of channeling it appropriately. Personal talent is important but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when fame dominates. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.

The midfielder had much to ponder after not being selected of the previous squad. He watched the national side qualify at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched the young talent excel as a counterpressing No 10. He heard Tuchel mention loving the team's dynamism and values. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in top form, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against their rivals and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder directed towards intimidating opponents rather than teammates. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to starting a conflict with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that his period out of the team has shown him that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now provide cover for the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to drop big names.

“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel said. “Jude just has a competitive streak. It takes a certain edge to reach the heights that he reached. We all need to help him and create a setting which he can use his drive in matches and for the objectives we are building as a team.”

The star took up most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers against one opponent and the other. Any other news? Indeed, how about another talent? This is another prodigious No 10 who needs coaching. Foden has been absent for England since spring and has struggled to hit the heights this year but the boss had to consider the player after his display in his club's victory versus the German side recently.

The issue, though, is the best way to deploy the multiple playmakers at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to select another youngster once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Is selecting multiple creators to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, restricting Harry Kane’s influence in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it hurts the attacking balance. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel wants him near Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “Phil will play in the central attacking zone, through the center. I've long had this fantasy regarding him for a long time. I think it fits his style best.”

Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly something is not right, be it the position, the setup, I don’t know.

“I think he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a specific system, to have a clear task. I think he profits greatly from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

Tuchel mentioned one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other drilling in goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Interest abounds.

Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options should Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with Bellingham going. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham setting up Kane to score in a friendly win versus the Scots in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.

“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the players,” he stated. He does not shy away to be blunt. There is still a sense of the player under scrutiny. He may not be assured to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be watching him carefully. Leave the ego outside. It will make a very strong squad into an more effective one.
