US Social Media Personality Fined Following Mass E-Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge

New South Wales authorities have issued a fine against an US-based online influencer and served two driving violation citations for alleged reckless operation after a large group of e-bike riders gathered on the famous Sydney landmark during peak-hour traffic on a weekday.

The Event: A Prohibited Ride

A gathering of around 40 people riding electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly subsequently reversed direction and rode through the city’s CBD and a nearby district.

"This had potential for serious injury or fatalities," stated NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on the following day.

Police indicated they did not immediately pursue the group out of concerns for public safety but rather found the assembly at a scenic Sydney lookout near the city gardens, at which point they broke up.

Fines Imposed for Influencer

Later in the week, police stated they had issued the American online personality who goes by Sur Ronster, 26, with two traffic infringement notices for careless operation (not involving death or prior injury), with a penalty of $562 and three demerit points each, connected to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The personality reportedly has more than 3.4m followers on YouTube and more than 1.2 million on Instagram.

Creator's Response

The online figure spoke with a major newspaper recently following the event gained traction on news sites and social media, saying he regretted giving "the biking community" a bad reputation.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. That was among the safest ride-outs I have witnessed," he said. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to abide by the rules and standards of Sydney. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it did not involve a group ride, it was just to greet people under the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group completes the entirety of the bridge and turns around, an illegal act. Or we reverse, basically, before we’re on the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to turn around."

Broader Context on E-Bike Regulation

The increase of electric bicycles on streets across the country has sparked increasing demands for stricter rules. The federal health minister, Mark Butler, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the harm that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," he said. "We’ve got to make sure we prevent these things coming into the country [and] officers are given the powers to crack down, to take them away, to crush them, to destroy them."

NSW recorded 226 injuries associated with ebikes in the previous year. But, in the first seven months of 2025, that number jumped to 233 injuries plus four fatalities.
